Treatment of Hangman¢¥s Fracture of the Cervical Spine

Abstract
Hangman¢¥s fracture has usually been treated by prolonged external immobilization. But recently a number of surgeon¢¥s have been advocating the advantages of early interbody fusion for the treatment of cervical fracture-dislocations.
As far as treatment is concerned this method is still controversial on the indication of conservative versus surgical treatment.
This is a report of 3 cases of hangman¢¥s fracture treated surgically; for one of them, internal splints was applied with methylmetacrylate; for two of them, anterior interbody fusions were performed.
Post-operative result was quite gratifying. Follow-up studies, up to one year, .demonstrated excellent outcome and absent neurological late sequelae.
We particularly believe early spinal fusion can reduce the period of immobili¡þzation and hospitalization.
